The Boating Capitol of the Upper Chesapeake
Haven Harbour, located in Rock Hall, Maryland is in the heart of the prime cruising grounds of the Chesapeake Bay.
For those boaters living in Philadelphia, Washington and Southern New Jersey metropolitan areas, you will find that spending a little more time in the car driving south from Upper Chesapeake Marinas will put you in Rock Hall, which is in the middle of the most popular cruising grounds of the Chesapeake Bay.
History of Rock Hall
By the early 20th century, oyster-dredging had become a mainstay of the local economy, and Rock Hall bustled with skipjacks and bugeyes bringing in their daily catch. Sadly, however, overfishing and environmental factors have all but wiped out this lucrative source of income.
Over time recreational boaters recognized the advantages of this fine, protected harbor – its easy access to the prime cruising grounds of the Chesapeake Bay, and proximity to Baltimore, Annapolis and the many ports of call on the Eastern Shore.
The Waterman's Museum at Haven Harbour houses a wonderful collection of old photos from the era of the waterman in Rock Hall - see photo left.
Hours: open 7 days a week 10 am-4 pm and by appointment; key available at the Ditty Bag Store in the main building at Haven Harbour Marina.
